Roger Tichborne (b. 1829), heir to an ancient Hampshire baronetcy, was reported to have drowned off South America in 1854. His mother, refusing to accept his death, placed world-wide advertisements seeking her son. Arthur Orton claimed to be Tichborne, a claim which was disputed in a civil action in 1871-1872 resulting in Orton being charged with perjury and gaoled.
